Lore[edit | edit source]

Bailiffs are manorial officials in the service of Noble Lords. While many of their duties involve the upkeep of the lands and resources of the manor proper and resolving local disputes, they are notorious amongst the peasantry for something else entirely. Bailiffs are collectors of rents and taxes from the villages surrounding their manors, and enforcers of the peasants’ labour obligations to their lords. These duties make them deeply unpopular with the villagers, particularly during the lean times. As the hated face of lordly imposition, Bailiffs are the first to die when the peasants get angry and revolt. While some bailiffs are honest villagers, others are bullies who enjoying threatening the manor's peasants.[1]

Longer serving and better trusted bailiffs enjoy more freedom and greater perks. Almost all are granted some autonomy by their lords, allowing them to deal with issues as they see fit. Most have significant local authority.[1]

Some of the highest ranking provincial bailiffs are lay members of the Cult of Verena. They typically spend their time travelling the countryside, doling out the goddess' blind justice on petty disputes over livestock and manorial boundaries.[1]
