The Barrow Legion are a playable sub-faction of Vampire Counts introduced in Total War: Warhammer II as part of the Aye-Aye! Patch. They are lead by Heinrich Kemmler, now separate from the main Vampire Counts faction. They are playable in campaign, multiplayer and custom battles.

The Barrow Legion do not exist in Total War: Warhammer. In that game, Heinrich Kemmler is part of the main Vampire Counts faction.

How they Play[edit | edit source]

A summary of The Barrow Legion gameplay:

  • Units: Large, varied roster featuring hordes of expendable undead infantry backed up by ethereal units and bat-like monsters. All lords are spellcasters.
  • Regiments of Renown: These are unique, more-powerful versions of regular Vampire Counts units.
  • Binding and Crumbling: In battle, units never rout. Rather, they will crumble into dust if losing badly.
  • Raise Dead: In campaign, units can be instantly recruited anywhere by raising the dead. Large battle sites provide more and better units to raise.
  • Vampiric Corruption: In campaign, vampires spread their influence, harming other factions. However, they take attrition in areas with low vampiric corruption.
  • Dark Magic: Vampire Counts factions use dark magic instead of money, though it functions the same.
  • Bloodlines and the Blood Kiss: Vampire Counts factions are able to collect a special currency when defeating and subjugating other factions. This currency is used to unlock powerful Bloodline Lords and faction wide buffs in the form of Forbidden Dark Arts.

Background[edit | edit source]

Heinrich Kemmler, the cunning Lichemaster who has troubled the Old World on many occasions is once more abroad. Freed from the shackles and illusion of subservience to the Von Carsteins, the Necromancer now prowls his old wanderings in the Grey Mountains, which straddle the border between The Empire and Bretonnia - sworn enemies who have moved against him in the past. But Kemmler has always coveted power beyond anything else, and this time the Forces of Order will not stop him - the dead will rise and the world will fall.

In Battle[edit | edit source]

The Barrow Legion use the Vampire Counts unit roster (with the exception of different legendary lords) and play largely the same. They have access to the same Regiments of Renown.

In Campaign[edit | edit source]

The Barrow Legion are a normal non-horde faction which controls settlements and provinces. They largely play the same as the main Vampire Counts faction, with the following exceptions:

The Barrow Legion has slightly different climate preferences than other Vampire Counts factions:

  • Suitable: Temperate, Wasteland, Mountain, Desert
  • Unpleasant: Frozen, Savannah, Jungle, Island
  • Uninhabitable: Ocean, Chaotic Wasteland, Magical Forest

  • Maintain control of 12 province(s), either by direct ownership or through vassals and military allies.
  • Destroy the following factions:
  • Control any 8 of the following settlements either by direct ownership or through vassals and military allies.
    • Couronne, Altdorf, Castle Drakenhof, The Oak of Ages, Miragliano, Skavenblight, Kislev, Hell Pit, Karaz-A-Karak, Karak Eight Peaks, Black Crag, Lahmia, Khemri, Sartosa, The Galleon's Graveyard, The Awakening, Wizard Caliph's Palace, Black Pyramid of Nagash
  • Maintain 80 units total.
  • Construct 3 of each of the following buildings:
    • Necromancer's Tower
  • Ensure that 2 of the following building(s) have been constructed:

Mortal Empires Long Campaign
