Death's true face radiates sinister magic; the cruel laughter of ancient gods echoes within its shadow.
Description[edit | edit source]
A Hierotitan is a gigantic animated statue whose face is carved in the likeness of one of the Nehekharan deities of death. These idols radiate a sinister aura of magic, and it is said that those who stand within their shadow can hear the cruel laughter of ancient gods. Hierotitans were constructed to stand within the uppermost chambers of the Tomb Kings' burial pyramids. It was believed that they would act as spirit guides for the souls of deceased kings, responsible for ushering the eternal spirits of monarchs between the mortal world and the Realm of Souls. No expense was spared in sculpting a Hierotitan, a towering effigy whose form was lavished with gold and gems. In one hand, it carries an elaborate staff, known as the Icon of Ptra, which bears the hieroglyph of the sun god and lights the Hierotitan's path as it walks in the abyss that separates the mortal world from the Realm of Souls. This light wards away the evil spirits that dwell in the dark, Daemons who would otherwise prey on the souls of those wandering the void. The Hierotitan's other hand grasps a giant pair of scales, called the Scales of Usirian.
Abilities[edit | edit source]
- ↑ Armour-Piercing: The damage of armour-piercing weapons mostly ignores the armour of the target, making them the ideal choice against heavily-armoured enemies. They are often heavier and attack at a slower rate though, making them less efficient against poorly-armoured targets.
- ↑ Armoured: Armoured units can block damage from any source apart from Armour-Piercing damage.
- ↑ Spellcaster: This unit can cast spells.
- ↑ Causes Terror: This unit can cause terror, making its melee target rout for a short time. Units that cause terror are immune to terror and fear themselves.
Bound Spells/Ability[edit | edit source]
The Hierotitan has two bound spells at it's disposal:
Strategy[edit | edit source]
If you judge him solely by his melee stats, the Hierotitan is probably the best construct the Tomb Kings can send into battle: highest health, melee attack/defence and tons of armor piercing damage. His bound spells are a nice bonus. However, one critical weakness of the Hierotitan is that he is slow as the proverbial molasses. Not only does he not have the very agile attack animations of either Warsphinx or Necrosphinx, making him vulnerable to being bogged down in melee, he is also the perfect target for any enemy missile units due to his size and lumbering gait. Thankfully the combination of high health, melee defence and armor means he will last for quite a while once he actually arrives at the fight.
It's also worth noting that the Hierotitan has several attacks in his animation cycle which deal magical damage instead of just purely physical, most notably the eye lasers. This allows him to effectively fight just about anything, though he will still get overwhelmed without proper support.
The Hierotitan's bound spells, like all bound spells, do not use Winds of Magic, which combined with his Spirit Conduit skill boosting the recharge and reserve of Winds means he is an exceptional companion to wizards. Spirit Leech is a very valuable spell that saps the health of a single unit--great for if the enemy sends their heavily outfitted Lord to try and deal with the Hierotitan. Shem's Burning Gaze is less useful, but does allow the Hierotitan to do a blast of magic damage from a distance--good for fighting missile units who would otherwise just outrun him. The targeting is somewhat finicky so make sure you have a clear shot to get the spell off.
