High Elf aristocrats are precise and calculating, and they bring this nature to the battlefield.

Noble is a High Elves High Elves Hero unit introduced in Total War: Warhammer II.

Recruitment[ | ]

Description[ | ]

High Elf Nobles are the leaders of their own respective armies and companies, warriors whose skill at arms and years of experience far surpass those of any other mortal race. The noble families of Ulthuan have led the High Elves through times of peace and conflict for thousands of years. They pride themselves on a deep sense of honour, as well as the mastery of both diplomacy and war as art forms. The High Elves believe an existence lived without precision to be hollow, and scarcely preferable to death. Any Elf noble is just at home fighting with a sword in bloody melee as he is loosing deathly-accurate arrows from afar, or even dictating the strategy of a campaign from a greater distance still. Though they are loyal to the Phoenix King even unto death, all High Elves of noble blood love intrigue and politics. Unfortunately, this sometimes means that armies are trusted to individuals based on political alignment, rather than on ability. Fortunately these instances are rare -- when the safety of Ulthuan is at stake, few Phoenix Kings have suffered such idiocy for long. There is no shortage of brave and talented commanders among the Asur, and courtly intrigue seldom prevents such individuals from harnessing their skills.

Attributes[ | ]

  • Wh2 main hef champion Melee Specialist
  • Armoured: Armoured units can block damage from any source apart from Modifier icon armour piercingArmour-Piercing damage.
  • Armour-Piercing: The damage of Modifier icon armour piercingarmour-piercing weapons mostly ignores the armour of the target, making them the ideal choice against heavily-armoured enemies. They are often heavier and attack at a slower rate though, making them less efficient against poorly-armoured targets.
  • Anti-Large: Anti-Large: Anti-large units have an advantage against targets that are at least as large as a horse. This advantage can be a Modifier icon bonus vs largedamage bonus against large targets or an attack that focuses on a very small area. However, some units are simply better against large targets because their attacks are slow and easy to dodge by skilled melee combatants.
  • Charge Defence Against Large Foes: When standing and bracing against a charge of large enemies (such as cavalry or monsters) this unit will negate the enemy's charge bonus.

Nobles are powerful melee fighters and have great worth on the campaign map. Embedded in an army, Nobles can bolster replenishment.

In battles, Nobles are extremely flexible. Keep them on foot or mounted on a steed for extra combat tankiness with maximal melee defense and a bonus versus large. Mount them on an eagle if you need some extra air power (especially early-to-mid game before dragons are available). Or put them on a chariot to use them as an anti-infantry flanking/harassment unit. Nobles are also one of the few High Elf melee units able to return strong offensive damage. This makes them excellent line holders, able to check enemy characters which archers can struggle with.

On the campaign map, Nobles serve as one of the few ways, and certainly the most reliable way, to gain the Influence resource so essential for any successful High Elves campaign. When choosing a target for the Secure Influence action, look for remote settlements without strong walls (which would lower their success chance) where enemy Heroes cannot interrupt you easily. Agent actions will always be seen as hostile and therefore lower diplomatic relations with the targeted faction, so keep that in mind when selecting targets as well.

As is true of all High Elven heroes and lords, considering a Noble's character trait when recruiting can dramatically increase or decrease his effectiveness. It is therefore optimal to recruit a Noble with a specific role (or even army comp) in mind, relative to the amount of Influence you are willing to spend. For example, if you are unwilling to spend any Influence on a particular Noble and intend to use him on the campaign map to Secure Influence, then you should choose a Noble with a trait that only decreases combat effectiveness, since he will ideally not be used in combat anyway. Conversely, if you have Influence to spare and plan to embed a Noble in an archer-heavy army, finding one with the Frugal trait is a strong option, as he will provide 20% extra ammunition for all archers and allow for 5% additional campaign movement range to boot.

Two particularly strong character traits available to Nobles for campaign bonuses are:

  • Emollient (+1 Control in all provinces, +5 Control local province, +5% Income from Entertaiment buildings factionwide)
  • Conscientious (+5 Diplomatic relations with Humans and High Elves, +2 Lord recruit rank factionwide, +2 Noble recruit rank factionwide, +1 Recruit rank in Hero's army)

The factionwide bonuses from these traits stack, meaning that a campaign which has amassed Nobles with these traits can be dramatically boosted.
