Saltpeter, also known as 'darkland snow', is a special kind of salt that powdermakers have discovered can drastically increase the potency of black powder. It's also a key ingredient in cinderblast bombs and the ordnance used by the gyro-fleets. It is highly volatile so must be kept away from wrong or inexperienced hands. Separate, reinforced powder rooms are used to store it.
