General ongoing Wiki projects[]

Project: images[]

The wiki needs more images! More screenshots of units, provinces and game mechanics, especially. Don't be afraid to upload some today! Revoran (talk) 02:58, 1 June 2020 (UTC)

  • Tips for uploading (Dunpeal (talk))
    • When uploading an image from the game files, please use the original game file name to maintain naming stardard
    • Please trim edges so that when image is used it looks prettier ;)
    • Please read and check for any warnings, such as duplicate / similar images, to avoid duplications
  • Sort through the list of duplicate files and delete (or tag for deletion) duplicates which aren't used so that there's only one copy of each file. -- Revoran 13:03, 1 August 2022 (UTC)

Main page overhaul[]

What do people think about somehow putting Legendary Lords on the main page? It seems like people pay a lot more attention to LLs than factions. And in most cases factions only have one LL anyway.

Thoughts? Revoran (talk) 11:06, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

That is a valid assessment. I think as well that people focus more on the LLs than the factions. Do you think we should remove the faction crests then? Might get too cluttery with everything together. Hammerture (talk) 22:39, 23 May 2020 (UTC)Hammerture
I personally prefer keeping the factions at the forefront to avoid clutter, at least until they inevitably split all the LL's into their own faction. But I am not going to pretend I am any sort of authority on the matter. DonQOT (talk) 01:43, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
OK thanks for the feedback, how about we stick with the current layout for now, but I might set up some unprotected test pages (I think there might already be some existing ones, I'll have a search around) where everybody can experiment to see what looks good for the front page. Revoran (talk) 07:09, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

Landmarks[]

The Special buildings page needs updating. Seems like every patch, a few more landmarks are added.

Furthermore, all the pages for the landmark buildings (see Category:Special landmark buildings for a list) should probably be categorised with stuff like Category:Mortal Empires landmarks and Category:Greenskins landmarks.

Special buildings are my jam, so I will be working towards fixing the red links and adding new ones when I have the time to indulge. DonQOT (talk) 01:45, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

Important articles which need a major overhaul/updates[]

  • Eye of the Vortex - the province list is woefully out of date and the interactive map (while awesome) is out of date Revoran (talk) 08:31, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

Unit stats needs[]

We need to think of a better way to handle unit stats, maybe with some kind of automation. It's just not practical to manually update hundreds of unit pages every patch. Revoran (talk) 11:06, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

I think there is a guy running a page that keeps track on unit stats. https://twwstats.com/ Might be worth to check it out if it can help us in some way? Hammerture (talk) 22:41, 23 May 2020 (UTC)

Faction / race pages[]

There is a lot of unnecessary duplicate info.

For instance, we probably don't need to list every Empire mechanic on both Reikland and The Empire. Ideally, general Empire mechanics would go on the Empire race page. But any faction-specific mechanics could go on the Reikland/Golden Order/The Huntsmarshal's Expedition pages.

On the same topic: faction mechanics need much better coverage, especially for newer factions. Eg: need coverage of all the new mechanics for Greenskins.

I'll try to take a look on this. Hammerture (talk) 22:43, 23 May 2020 (UTC)

Legendary Lord pages[]

Many of these need updating.

You can use Malekith as an example of a good one. --- Revoran

I'll be fiddling around with this one too. DonQOT (talk) 01:47, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

Battle maps[]

The Wiki has basically zero information about these. We should probably at least cover the multiplayer ones.

Navbox fixes needed[]

I lack (have lost?) the ability to update navboxes and would like to update two particular matters. Specifically, "Da boys!" (Greenskin unit navbox) erroneously has Night Goblin Warboss in the base game section and the Mortal Empires navbox still has Lothern in the place of Eataine. Could somebody with the authority to do so please correct these? - 24.108.205.51 21:26, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi, I think what's happened is that users who aren't logged in have lost the ability to edit these pages. Could you try creating an account/logging in and see if that fixes the issue? If not I'll fix those navboxes for you. ") -- Revoran 22:23, 2 November 2020 (UTC)

Beastmen "Beast Paths"[]

So I made a mistake and somehow garrisoned an army into a herdstone while they were in the beast paths and I can't find a way to get them out. is there any way for me to fix this? -- User:XOUTRYDERx 03:54 17 July 2021

Hi OUTRYDER, unfortunately I haven't come across that issue ... it sounds like a bug. You might want to report it on the official forums here. There might be someone else who has had the same issue, so have a look through the forum before posting.
Hope you find a solution and welcome to the wiki :) -- Revoran 09:06, 17 July 2021 (UTC)

Something is wrong with the wiki[]

The wikia is working fine, but I cannot access the top sections of every article. Can someone help fix the design of the wiki? I am unable to finish any edits as easily as before.

HorsesDrivingVans (talk) 11:47, 26 August 2021 (UTC)

Hi Horses, thank you for flagging this up. As indicated on the Wiki Discord, this technical problem is now resolved (27 August 2021). Cheers! Dunpeal (talk)

Armor template for the wh3 unit infoboxes[]

So I've finally started to understand how this infobox works but I'm having trouble with the armor stat. I cannot get it to appear on the infobox even when I put in the information on the template page.

Here are the ones that I currently put on Template:Unit armor wh3:

|wh3_dlc20_chs_cav_chaos_chariot_msla_ro=wh2_main_body_110 |wh3_dlc20_chs_mon_warshrine_msla=wh2_main_body_60 |wh3_dlc20_chs_cha_chaos_sorcerer_slaanesh_msla=wh2_main_body_80 |wh3_dlc20_chs_cha_chaos_sorcerer_shadows_msla=wh2_main_body_80

So I would be thankful if someone can point out what am I doing wrong. -Kingdude

I think the template currently doesn't support displaying armor and missile block stats, neither automated nor manually. But idk how to change it, it seems highly complex. OnlyTrueWK (talk) 17:27, 18 February 2023 (UTC)

Well, I think I found a temporary solution. Putting the info in the above template and the putting the matching armour template in the actual unit infobox seems to show the armour stat with actual value instead of being 0%. As for the missile block, its template can be put into the infobox without a problem. But thanks for the help -Kingdude

Update: I think I found the problem. The armor stat in the infobox had <format></format> instead of <default></default> unlike the other stats, so that's why it wasn't showing on the infobox. Going to test it with some pages that I've been working on, hopefully this issue is finally resolved. -Kingdude

Chaos Dwarfs Invasion Total War Warhammer 3[]

"The invasion of the Chaos Dwarfs has begun, there's no denying they look really cool, and they have a unique mechanic." is an exciting new addition to Total War Warhammer 3, that offers a unique gaming experience, challenging players to master a new faction and dominate their enemies with cunning and strategy, and big guns ^^

Unit Tiers[]

Hey... so... I am a very low-level wiki user, just set up an account here, and barely have any idea what I'm doing to format the main body of an article, let alone touch something as complex as the unit infoboxes on this wiki! BUT, I do value accurate information for all and would love to contribute where I can. I suppose my question/concern is multifaceted.

  1. What is the general understanding of unit tiers? Since the addition of recruitable basic units from capital buildings, I often hear them called "tier 0" units in casual Total Warhammer community discussions. Technically speaking they are really Tier I, since they are available in a Tier I settlement, right? Unit tier is a direct reflection of the level/tier of building the unit is available from, correct? This is important to clarify for the following questions.
  2. In the faction unit roster pages, the charts of each unit type include unit tier level. But oftentimes those manually entered tiers in the chart oftentimes do not match the above understanding of unit tier levels, and even less often match the unit tier shown in the individual unit infoboxes. While carefully poking around (not editing, just trying to figure out) the unit templates system, I noticed (please forgive my lack of technical knowledge to describe this, will do my best) in the main template that the little Roman numeral style picture that displays the unit tier is 1 number higher than the listed tier in the edit box. In other words, when editing the template page, I see "|tier =0", but the preview displays the "Tier I unit" badge. I don't know where the badge is coming from or how the wiki has been designed to automatically update that image based on editing the info in the main template, and I barely understand what I am talking about but... Hopefully someone more knowledgeable is tracking with me? Is this performing as designed?
  3. This is my main point: If my understanding of unit tiers is correct, then a very large portion of listed unit tiers on this wiki are incorrect, especially at lower tiers. For example, Tomb Kings Skeleton Spearmen are displayed as Tier II units in their page. There is no way this can be correct, can it? But that info is being pulled directly from the game files? That is just one example. I have seen things like this all over the place!
  4. My vague understanding is that all the info in the unit templates is downloaded directly from the game files, correct? So editing them manually would be breaking form because it no longer matches what is the game files? But if that's true, then does that just mean the actual game files often list the incorrect unit tier?

I would love to help out by correcting this issue whenever I see it, but would hate to mess things up.

  • Should I manually edit any charts in the unit roster pages to reflect tier correctly?
  • Should I manually edit the template pages for the same reason?
  • If I do manually edit the template pages, the edits will just revert basically every time there is an update, no?
  • (Separate but related question is unit speed. That is left blank more often than not in the unit infoboxes, but, again, would hate to manually edit something that is being pulled directly from the game files)

Any help/guidance would be appreciated. Thanks! --SeigeVan (talk) 15:26, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

In regards to the unit Tiers, this was a bit complicated as there used to be only 3 different unit tiers shown on unit cards (and even this was a Warhammer III addition, I'm pretty sure); but of course there are 5 building tiers, and units within a given tier varied wildly in strength. A recent update made it so that unit cards display Tier 1-5, and while it doesn't match up with building requirements and doesn't always make much sense (imo), I'd think that this is the value that should be used.
Can't say too much about the technical aspect of the templates, just that a lot is indeed pulled directly from the game files, but I don't think it is automatically updated. OnlyTrueWK (talk) 16:56, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
Yes, OnlyTrueWK is correct. Most of the data of templates were (when they were created) initially pulled by a bot directly from the game's data. From that point onward, it's a manual job to update the unit's stats when CA makes changes ingame. Since we had for, for Example the Spearmen unit from The Empire, a bunch of WH1 patches changing stats, a big bunch of WH2 patches changing stats, DLCs changing stats, and now WH3 patches changing stats, we can safely assume that most unit pages on this wiki haven't been updated in a long time and are out of date (at least stat and template-wise). Examples of races that should be mostly correct/complete (and use the correct formatting etc) are unit pages from the Chaos Dwarfs, The Empire and Vampire Coast rosters. As me and Kingdude have been updating those. Updating stats, updating templates, etc. But yes you are correct SeigeVan, most pages will not be up to date. As that takes a lot of time to update, time the current active editors don't have.
As for the tiers, it's indeed what OnlyTrueWK said. We had for a very long time only tiers 1-3, and recently CA changed their system to divide between tiers 1-5. So in infoboxes those values are often not updated yet either as it requires active wiki editors, time and effort to update. As for the tiers on unit roster pages, like The Empire unit roster, those pages were mainly designed and filled by user CaptainKiddo. And I personally am not sure whether the tiers they added were the actual unit tiers or the tier of the building they're recruited from. I couldn't possibly answer that. Kennyannydenny (talk) 17:12, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
From my understanding (I don't remember where I read this so I can't provide source) unit tier is based on the gold cost of a unit. My fuzzy estimate for each tier is:
  • Tier 1 is 100 to 500
  • Tier 2 is 600 to 900
  • Tier 3 is 1000 to 1500
  • Tier 4 is 1600 to 1900
  • Tier 5 is 2000+

For example in regards to the building level/tier question you can check the Ghorgon's Lair despite being a tier 5 building it only gives one tier 5 unit the Ghorgon while the Cygor and Incarante Beast are tier 3 and 4 respectively. So in short it's not building based. -KingDude

Okay so Tomb Kings Skeleton Spearmen are indeed considered a Tier II unit? That seems... asinine - by any measure ha.
I was really hoping this would be a simple matter of updating info to help out a bit as I play through a campaign but... This all seems way over my head and a bit complicated in the way CA assigns unit tier.
Thanks for the clarifications! I really would help out as much as possible as I used the wiki casually but I am terrified of just messing things up at this point. Thank you all for all your hard work on the wiki! --SeigeVan (talk) 17:29, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
Edit: is twwstats.com a trustworthy source of info for updating unit stats on the wiki?
Edit2: Total War WARHAMMER Wiki:Notes on infoboxes totally outdated??
Yes, twwstats.com is trushtworthy, and yes that page is outdated. I suggest looking at pages like Chaos Dwarf Warriors or Gallows Giant (Necrofex Colossus) to see a page with the correct standard. You can also use their associated templates to see how those should be. And as a side note, as you requested in the summary of the Template:Wh2 main hef inf spearmen 0 main‎, yes your edit was great! :) Kennyannydenny (talk) 20:07, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks. Glad I did that part correctly. But... phew... I have so much more respect for the work you guys are doing after wading into the shallows of this template system. My goal was to correct just one unit to see if I could bring it up to the standard and... I studied your pages enough to kind of figure out how it all works and learned I would have to build new templates for the main and general templates to pull from for the unit infofbox to pull from and... yikes. I was correct originally. WAY above my pay grade! --SeigeVan (talk) 20:16, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
