One of the many passageways deep beneath the ground.

The Underway is a network of caverns and tunnels that run under much of the world. Dwarfs, Greenskins and Skaven armies can enter the Use Underway stance to travel underground, avoiding danger. However this carries a chance of being intercepted. Many battle maps take place underground in the underway.

Strategotactical considerations[ | ]

  • The Underway is one of the most useful tools for the campaign mode, giving armies of factions with a limited army roster incredible strategic mobility, allowing them for bypassing natural obstacles and cutting down on the time it takes to cross the map. Using the Underway renders the army immune to attrition, so it's quite useful when taking the fight to the enemy in wastelands and especially the chaotic North - once the Dwarfs arrive, they enjoy a considerable advantage in range and resilience over human and other factions attempting to exterminate the Norscan threat.
  • However, armies can be intercepted while using the Underway, with battles resolved on special underground maps (see image to the right). They are typically very narrow compared to the usual battlefield and flat, meaning artillery and ranged units have a tremendous advantage and the ability to flank the enemy is greatly limited, if not eliminated entirely.
  • Wood Elves and Beastmen have similar advantages with their Worldroots and Beast-Paths, respectively.
  • If an army is defeated in the Underway, it will be completely wiped out.
