Waterways should not be confused with water terrain features in battle maps.

Waterways, also called sea/ocean provinces are areas of the campaign map covered by water, such as oceans and seas. They are different to provinces, which are on land.

Overview[ | ]

  • Armies and lone heroes can use their movement to embark (move on waterways). This must be done at a beach or port settlement, not a cliff. Once embarked, their unit model on the campaign map will become a ship and armies will have special naval stances available instead of their regular stances.
  • Just like land provinces, waterways have their own types of terrain. See that article for more information.
  • In Total War: Warhammer II, the Aye-Aye! Patch changed things so that sea battles may be fought on special island battle maps and Black Ark battle maps (they can still be autoresolved if you wish).
  • Settlements that are directly next to a waterway are special port settlements. Armies/heroes can move from a port settlement directly to embark on the waterway and vice versa.

About rivers[ | ]

Rivers appear on most campaign maps, and are essentially a land terrain feature. They cost extra movement for land armies/heroes to cross.

However, in The Old World campaign there are also two "rivers" which are actually waterways: the River Reik and River Talabec. These rivers can be embarked on and work identical to other waterways. The Talabec is connected to the Reik, which is in turn connected to the Middle Sea and the rest of the ocean.

The Reik and Talabec have the river terrain type, which has a movement cost of 62.
