Yvresse is a playable High Elves faction, led by Eltharion. They were introduced in Total War: Warhammer II with The Warden and the Paunch DLC.

Description[ | ]

The Kingdom of Yvresse is the land of mists. It encompasses not only a sizable part of eastern Ulthuan, but also the islands of the Eastern Ocean.

The mainland of Yvresse is a wild coastline, fringed by deep coniferous forests. Long fjords thrust inland from the coast. The forests tumble down the mist-shrouded valleys right to the water's edge. The foothills of the Annulii march off to form distant peaks that tower dramatically into the clouds.[5] Yvresse is the least densely populated kingdom of Ulthuan, and by those Elves from other realms, it is often considered a bleak coastal realm, and less than lovely ā€“ but to those who call it their home, the towering cliffs and soaring sea birds are sights as fine as any to be seen on the continent of Ulthuan.[1a]

To the east of the mainland are the Shifting Isles. This is an area shrouded in legend, where ancient spells of illusion shield the eastern coast of Ulthuan from intruders. The whole area is wreathed in mists, and within these billowing clouds, strange and terrifying things are often seen; whether these are the products of men's ensorcelled imaginations or whether they actually exist is something not often discussed. However, the Shifting Isles definitely live up to their name, and each is seldom encountered twice in the same spot. This creates treacherous mazes of shoals and sandbars which can confuse even High Elf sailors.

Yvresse has only one major city: Tor Yvresse, a metropolis as beautiful and grand as any of the Elven cities of old. Sadly, its glory days are long past. Many of the old mansions are uninhabited, and the great amphitheatres are silent and empty. The walls of the city are mighty and deep, but there are never enough warriors to man them, and many wonder if the city could withstand another serious invasion.

The people of this land raise regiments of some of the most determined and steadfast warriors in Ulthuan, as befits the homeland of Eltharion and so many other paladins. The favoured weapon is the spear, and the warriors fight shoulder to shoulder with almost unshakable discipline.

Though Dark Elf raiders seldom travel so far around Ulthuan to beach their dread vessels upon Yvresse'e shores, the warriors of the realm must always be on guard. The sorcerous mists that blanket field and fen have ever been the haunt of Daemons, and both arrow and spear must be eternally ready to cast them back into the void. The soldiery of Yvresse is therefor of a grimmer cast of mind than warriors from other lands, for their eyes have borne witness to much that mortal creatures were not meant to see. Thus have the warriors of Yvresse gained a reputation for holding the line where others do not, a glimmer of deeper resolve forged in battle against the most unearthly of foes.

Starting territory[ | ]

Yvresse has a dynamic start position, meaning that which settlements they control and where their armies are, changes depending on which faction you are playing as.

In Campaign[ | ]

Mists of Yvresse - a defensive system that buffs Yvresse units and their allies against invaders.

Dungeon of Athel Tamarha - captured Lords and Heroes can be used to replicate abilities, released to infiltrate enemies and siphon their wealth, or simply executed for resources. It can also upgrade military and defensive facilities in Yvresse, along with Mistwalker Units.

Ladrielle's Blessings - special resource to upgrade Mists of Yvresse.

Mistwalker Units: Yvresse can recruit faction-exclusive units, which have better battle statistics than their base units. They are capped with limited capacity, which can be increased with the appropriate upgrades in Athel Tamarha and completing the 3 Greenskin settlement occupation missions. Outside of Tor Yvresse, local recruitment requires the construction of the Mistwalker building chain. The can also be recruited globally or instantly like Regiments of Renown, but at a much higher cost.

Mistwalker Lords and Heroes: Upon reaching Rank 15, any non-legendary lord or hero unit will be given a dilemma to be inducted into the Mistwalker ranks. The player can choose from one of three titles to grant the character a unique trait that provides a series of buffs and an amount of Warden's Supplies, or the player can decline the promotion.

Eye of the Vortex[ | ]

You have up to 150 turns to prepare for The Final Battle against Grom and the Broken Axe invasion of Ulthuan. Completing the 3 missions to occupy the Greenskin settlements of Gor Gazan, insert name here, and Speakatzuma will provide much needed Mistwalker unit capacity and other campaign bonuses. Quickly establish trade with the other High Elf Factions to secure your economy. You can always elect to initiate The Final Battle early before the 150 turns have elapsed.

Mortal Empires[ | ]

You will have two start positions with two small armies: Eltharion leading the offensive against the greenskins at Gronti Mingol, and an archmage at Tor Yvresse holding off the Skull Crag invasion. Choosing to press forward into The Badlands or recalling Eltharion back to Ulthuan will have a significant impact on the course of the campaign. Naggarond and/or Cult of Pleasure will likely invade Ulthuan and take the Sword of Khaine early on.

Warden's Supplies are much harder to obtain, as the special missions that award them are absent in Mortal Empires. Therefore, you must rely on indoctrinating/executing prisoners and razing greenskin settlements in order to build up Athel Tamara. Remember that auto-resolve has a minimal chance of capturing prisoners, so all early battles should be fought manually to ensure successful capture with Warden's Cage.

Immortal Empires[ | ]

Basically the same as the Mortal Empires start, except you will be given a dilemma after capturing Gronti Mingol to either keep Tor Yvresse under your control or relinquish it to an AI faction for a large payout of money. Aside from Skull Crag from the South, N'Kari and the Seducers of Slaanesh will be the major threat from the North if you keep Tor Yvresse. Keeping N'Kari imprisoned after capturing him will allow you to finish off his faction with ease.

In the wasteland around Gronti Mingol, your immediate opponents will be the The Bloody Handz, Exiles of Khorne, Khemri, Harbinger of Disaster, and Clan Mors. The Chevaliers de Lyonesse, Thegan's Errantry, and the Knights of Origo are potential allies. Note that only Eltharion's army will be immune to wasteland attrition.

Trivia[ | ]

  • Yvresse is the first target and threat to Aranessa when playing as her. Invading Ulthuan can be an easy way of being drawn into difficult fights with Tyrion and Alarielle eventually, so it may be best to sack and raze settlements before moving on.
  • The starting Loremaster of Hoeth in Eye of the Vortex and Mortal Empires will always be named "Cavill", and he starts with a unique Trait called "White Wolf" in addition to his random generic starting trait. The trait grants him Bonus vs large character +15 Bonus vs Large and one use of the ability Wh main item abilities potion of toughness Potion of Toughness; its description simply reads: "Wind's Howling." This is a reference to actor Henry Cavill, known for his portrayal of Geralt of Rivia in the Netflix series "The Witcher".
  • In Immortal Empires, the starting Archmage (Heavens) has a unique trait that references "lilac and gooseberries." This references the signature aroma of Yennifer of Vengerberg, another character of "The Witcher" series.
